How to Care for Your Wool Felt Sauna Hat

Your Noggin is built to last - but only if you treat it right. Wool felt is a natural fibre, and a little care goes a long way toward keeping your sauna hat performing session after session. Here's everything you need to know.

After Every Session: Rinse with Cool Water

The simplest habit is also the most important. After each sauna session, hold your Noggin under cool running water and gently work it through the felt. This rinses away sweat and dissolved salts without stressing the fibres. Hot water is the enemy - it accelerates felting and can cause irreversible shrinkage, so always keep it cool.

Air Dry in a Warm Spot

Once rinsed, reshape your Noggin by hand and set it upright or hang it in a warm, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, which can fade the felt, and never use a clothes dryer or direct heat source. Let airflow do the work - wool is naturally antimicrobial, so it dries fresh without needing anything else.

Why Machine Washing Will Ruin It

This is the big one: never put your Noggin in the washing machine. The combination of heat and mechanical agitation causes wool fibres to interlock irreversibly - a process called felting. The result is a hat that has shrunk, stiffened, and lost its fit. If your hat needs more than a rinse, a gentle hand-wash in cool water with a small amount of mild, wool-safe soap is the maximum intervention required. Skip the spin cycle entirely.

Avoid detergents with enzymes or bleach, which break down wool protein and degrade the felt over time. A fragrance-free, pH-neutral soap is your safest option.
